Sources & Methodology

How this hub was built, which sources it relies on, and where its limits are โ€” so researchers, regulators and journalists can properly assess it.

Nature of this hub

This site is a research and advocacy hub built for a conference intervention on crypto taxation in Africa, later expanded into a set of ongoing analytical tools (country profiles, calculators, dashboard). It is not an official audit commissioned by an administration, nor a database validated by a statistical body โ€” it is an independent documentary synthesis, assembled and maintained by a single researcher, for educational and awareness purposes.

Every country-synthesis page, every identified challenge and every figure comes from a combination of the public sources cited below โ€” never from direct access to confidential administrative data or proprietary commercial APIs (Chainalysis, Elliptic, etc.), to which the author has no subscription.

Sources used, by category

๐Ÿ“œ Official regulatory and tax texts

BCEAO โ€” Instruction nยฐ008-05-2023 governing electronic-money issuers/VASPs in WAEMU; communiquรฉs from the International Conference on Crypto-Assets, Dakar, May 8, 2026.
FIRS (Nigeria) โ€” circular on crypto capital gains taxation (10% rate); CBN communications on lifting the crypto banking ban (2023).
SARS / FSCA (South Africa) โ€” SARS doctrine on classifying crypto-assets as taxable financial assets; FSCA's VASP registration framework.
FSC Mauritius โ€” VASP licensing framework (Virtual Asset and Initial Token Offering Services Act, 2021).
Bank of Ghana, RBZ Zimbabwe, NBFIRA Botswana, Bank Al-Maghrib, 2018 Finance Law (Algeria) โ€” respective public communiquรฉs and regulatory texts.
Kenya Finance Act 2023 โ€” provision on the 3% tax on digital asset transfers.
Indonesia โ€” PMK/Bapebti 2022 โ€” withholding-tax model (0.1% WHT) + VAT (0.11%) on crypto transactions, cited as a comparative benchmark.

๐Ÿ“Š Market data & volumes

Chainalysis โ€” Geography of Cryptocurrency Report (2021-2023 editions) โ€” crypto receipt volumes by country, P2P share, global adoption ranking. Used as a reference, without access to the Chainalysis analytics platform itself.
Specialized press reporting (CoinDesk, Bitcoin.com, Rest of World, pan-African financial press) on P2P volumes (Paxful, Binance P2P) and country-by-country regulatory news.
Global Financial Integrity (GFI) โ€” estimates of illicit financial flows (IFFs) leaving Africa, used by structural analogy with the crypto issue.
Boston Consulting Group โ€” estimate of $16 trillion in real assets tokenized by 2030, cited for the tokenization section.

โš–๏ธ International frameworks & institutions

OECD โ€” Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), 2022.
FATF โ€” Recommendations 15 and 16 on virtual asset service providers (VASPs).
ATAF (African Tax Administration Forum) โ€” technical notes and publications on digital taxation in Africa.
GIABA โ€” publications on AML/CFT in West Africa.

๐Ÿงฉ Landmark cases and public matters

Africrypt (South Africa, 2021) โ€” financial press reporting and FSCA communications on the investigation (alleged amount โ‰ˆ$3.6B, not definitively established by ruling at time of writing).
Mirror Trading International (South Africa, 2020-21) โ€” court proceedings and liquidators' communications (โ‰ˆ$1.7B).
Central African Republic โ€” adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender (April 2022) and BEAC's reaction, documented by the international press.
Binance Africa โ€” reconstructed transaction scenario ("case study" section): built for educational purposes from publicly documented mechanisms (KYC, P2P, fee structure), not a real case file nor data from an identified user.

๐Ÿงฐ Commercial tools and firms landscape

Official sites and press releases of the vendors cited (Chainalysis, Elliptic, TRM Labs, Merkle Science, Crystal Blockchain, CipherTrace/Mastercard, Coinfirm, Solidus Labs, AnChain.ai, Lukka, Scorechain).
Pricing positioning shown in relative categories (high / medium / accessible) โ€” no African commercial contract was consulted; precise license pricing is not public.

Limits to know before citing this hub

๐Ÿ” No access to administrative data

Regulatory status by country is a qualitative reading of public texts available as of the stated date โ€” not a direct confirmation from each administration.

๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ P2P remains structurally invisible

Figures like "~70% P2P volume in Nigeria" are orders of magnitude from third parties (Chainalysis, press) โ€” no exhaustive official statistic exists on this segment, anywhere in Africa.

๐Ÿงฎ Revenue estimates = simulations

The tax revenue calculator applies rates to estimated volumes โ€” an illustrative modeling exercise, not an official budget forecast.

๐Ÿข Tool landscape = market view, not an audit

The vendor list reflects the publicly known global market โ€” it does not claim to catalogue every existing government contract, many of which are confidential.

๐Ÿ‘ค Single author, no review board

Content produced and maintained by a single independent researcher โ€” it has not undergone formal academic peer review.

โฑ๏ธ A fast-moving field

Crypto regulation changes within months in several African countries โ€” check each page's update date before citing a status as current.
